About the module

The module is recommended both for people who want to be professionals in the field of databases and treat databases as a useful tool to support everyday work. For the former, it is an introduction to the world of databases, in which they learn about their different models, are taught how to design the database from scratch and how to create advanced queries. For others, it is a complete set of tools that allows them to create advanced reporting systems, as well as database applications. MS Access is a powerful tool that allows you to collect and store business data cheaply. In turn, MS Excel works great with analyzing this data. The combination of these two tools with a solid foundation in designing and querying databases gives highly sought after competences in the labor market that can be combined not only with IT professions.

Your education path

In order to obtain the engineer degree you need at least 210 ECTS.

In your first year you take obligatory courses and later, starting with the third semester (that is your second year), you choose what you want to study. How? It is easy. Choose at least one module (formerly called a specialty) which is most interesting for you and then continue along  the chosen path till the end of your studies. If you wish, you can take next modules or individual subjects- including those from other fields of study. All modules you complete will be visible on your diploma.

Designing database applications in MS Access
4 ECTS

You will learn how to design a database and create it in MS Access. You will learn to create tables, queries, reports and forms using the graphical user interface. You will get familiar with the elements of programming in VBA and learn how to create a complete database application in MS Access.

Advanced T-SQL queries
5 ECTS

You will learn to write complex queries (queries) in T-SQL. You will master the instructions for data manipulation (INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE). You will learn to create views, manage errors and NULL values.

NoSQL databases
4 ECTS
You will become familiar with non-SQL data models. You will learn about the possibilities of collecting and processing unstructured data. You will learn the directions of application of NoSQL databases. You will see the use of NoSQL databases in practice using one of the popular systems for processing this kind of data.
Construction and operation of BI solutions in Excel
3 ECTS

You will learn how to create local BI solutions using pivot tables and Excel pivot charts. You will learn the basics of creating database queries, creating models, KPIs.

We strongly recommend you choose the Database Design and Administration in the MS SQL Server Environment module after you complete the Database Design module. By selecting this option, you can be sure that your schedule won't include classes conducted at the same time. In another way, you may need to attend classes with different groups to avoid overlaps.

A teacher and practitioner specializing in databases, with many years of experience in using MS Access in teaching and for implementing databases. Author of several textbooks on databases, including one in English, plenty of teaching materials as well as several complete projects in which MS Access was used as a database system.

Module coordinator recommendation

You will learn to design and implement relational databases. You’ll see how you can create a fully working application in MS Access, with all queries, forms and reports, and how to use Visual Basic for Applications to communicate with databases. You will learn advanced T-SQL tools for performing data operations in SQL Server. You will learn the latest trends in databases, you will learn  the practical sideof  various types of noSQL databases. You wil lbecome familiar with the possibilities of advanced data processing in Excel.
